Robert Mondavi

What’s a good meal to go with expensive cabernet?
My brother gave me an expensive bottle of 1999 Robert Mondavi reserve cabernet. I’d like to share it with my friends. I’m a grad student and can’t afford an expensive meal. Also, one of us doesn’t eat red meat. Any relatively easy, inexpensive suggestions? Recipes welcome.
A relatively inexpensive way to showcase that wine (and congrats on getting that bottle — it’s wonderful stuff!) would be to pair it with a cheese plate. Serve some good crusty bread and some plain crackers on the side.
“The Cabernet Sauvignon grape generally favors cow’s milk cheeses and generally works well with washed rind variety of cow’s milk cheeses, from young to well-aged. Cabernets also tolerate many milder blues.”
If you have a good cheese store nearby, ask for some suggestions but I’d go with an aged Gouda, some Wensleydale, a large wedge of Romano, and a good Roquefort. But stay away from salads and any dish with lemon juice or vinegar. You want the wine to be the showpiece and anything that acid will interfere with it.
Enjoy!
