What You Should Know Before You Choose A Bottle Of White Wine
Firstly, it is imperrative to question for what purpose are you choosing a bottle of white wine. This is not supposed to question your want but maybe to provide a simple starting point to make your selection of a wine simpler. Will you be serving food? Or are you after just a drinking wine? Actually if food is to be served what will that food be?
Lastly, what will the season bring outside or what is the prediction looking to be like whilst enjoying your wine on the patio. White wines served inside will not have to under go the analysis of the last questions but white wines should really be enjoyed in the open air. Come to your own conclusions as opposed to following the prognosticators (read meteorologists) predictions. Unlike the rest of the population these men and women have the bliss of being half right, half the time while still not losing their jobs. As said by the Beach Boys, “Wouldn’t it be nice?”
If you are buying white wine to be drunk on its own, or just to have available so your associates have the luxury of pleading for a glass of white stay with Southern Hemisphere white wine. Old World white wines are typically made to be had with food and leave guests wanting something solid as soon as they try the wine. Similarly with lighter, more acidic white wines, they plead for some food to go with the style as they were designed. North American chardonnays, which are often heavily oaked and buttery due to the malolactic fermentation process are ideal stand alone white wines. Additionally, Australia and Chile among other “New World” wine growing countries also produce fine sipping chardonnays. The lesser known muscat grape, normally grown in the Rhone Valley of Southern France is another delicious stand alone grape that expresses a fruity explosion with a characteristically grapefruit dominant nose. These are mere suggestions and are certainly not the exclusive list in your journey for a white wine. Analyze a few, enjoy, record your findings, and believe yourself. There are no wrong answers if you, or your guest, enjoy the testing.
When white wine is meant to go with food, things get a tiny bit more interesting. There are no concrete regulations; yet, there are wines make certain foods enhanced and taste completely differently; for the better!. Champagne or muscadet are devine suited for oysters, while sauvignon blancs and pinot grigios go with with nearly any light foods, foie gras and sauternes are an excellent combo while Gewurztraminer, and especially, Gruner Veltliener make superb compliments to Asian food from Thailand to the Indian Subcontinent. The web is full up with food and wine combination examples and nearly all of them hold true. Go and find out.
Regularly people get too anxious and immersed with the thought of making a wrong decision that they do not enjoy the experience when choosiing a white wine; that is an example of the errors you can really make if you use these guidelines.

1988 Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (wine stained label) According to Wine Spectator: “An austere style, with a touch of mint and spice, but has plenty of black cherry, currant, plum and cedar flavors. The tannins are substantial and it could use a little more body in the middle.” (11/91) According to Robert Parker: “To his credit, Randy Dunn could give a hoot about what writers or other professionals think about his wines. I don’t believe a single thin… |
